Dear Third Grade families,

We can use technology to learn more about nature!

You can play Alaskan Adventure on PBS Kids here, and complete a nature journal as you learn about different animals in Alaska with Molly of Denali!

Here is a site with birds and their songs… Just click on each bird to hear its song. Once you learn some of their songs, maybe you’ll hear these birds as you go for walks in your neighborhood!

Take care and have a wonderful week!

Week of 5/11/2020

Dear Third Grade families,

I hope you’re doing well!

This week, for computer class, we will focus on coding with Scratch.

Follow this link and click on the triangular “Play” button to see how to use Scratch (turn your iPad so it’s wide instead of tall to see more of the screen). You can create new Backgrounds and Sprites (or characters), and then use blocks to get your sprites to move and talk; you can create stories, games, and so much more!

Enjoy coding with Scratch!

Week of 5/4/2020

Dear third graders,

If you have a computer at home that supports Adobe Flash player, you will be able to play games that put animals in the right categories (reptile, insect, bird, amphibian, or mammal) as they walk through their natural habitat (see below). The school iPads do not support Adobe Flash player, unfortunately, so you can also visit code.org to continue coding this week.

Coding:

  1. Click here for the Weebly site
  2. Click on “Third Grade Coding” (scroll down under the Owl picture)
  3. Start where you left off, or if you haven’t started, start now and enjoy the coding process!

Animal Categories

Click on each game, and then decide if each animal is a mammal, insect, bird, reptile, or amphibian!

Typing

Please continue practicing your typing also, whenever the adults in your family say it is okay!

Dance Mat Typing… please choose a level that is good for you!

Week of 4/27/2020

Dear third graders,

Please continue to practice your typing, using Dance Mat Typing or Type to Learn! Learning to type takes lots of practice, so try to practice your typing regularly, even for 10 minutes, when it’s okay with the adults in your household!

Week of 4/20/2020

Dear Third Grade families,

I hope you had a wonderful Spring Break!

To keep up with your typing skills, I have found the following links to games with good links through kidztype.com. I hope you can take the time to practice regularly, whenever it is okay with adults in your family, so that you can get better and better at typing for blogs, homework assignments, and any writing your teachers want you to do.

Here are good links to Dance Mat Typing… please choose a level that is good for you!

Here is a fun typing game to help you keep up with your typing skills: Typing Balloon

Hope you have a wonderful week!

Week 4/6/2020

Hello Third Grade families!

I hope this message finds you well.

For computer this week, since Earth Day is coming up, please check out a game on PBS Kids: Creature Features! Creature Features is a SciGirl game that allows you to walk through the park and the city, both during the day and at night. You walk along looking for animals, then stop and use the camera to take a picture whenever you spot an animal. When you take a picture, the field guide opens, telling you about the animal and allowing you to check off one physical feature it has (for example, the burrowing owl has long legs and a curved beak). The map is in the top left corner, so when you can’t walk any more, click on the map and choose the next place (and night or day) to walk and look for animals: either the park at night, the park during the day, the city at night, or the city during the day. The goal is to check off all features in your field guide and notice as many animals as you can!

Happy Earth Day!

You can continue to code as well, but it seemed exciting to play this game from PBS Kids that relates to science and nature 🙂

Hope you have a wonderful week during Spring Break!

Take care!

Mrs. Larochelle

Week of 3/30/2020

Hello Third Grade families!

It looks like a number of you made it to Lesson 4, Debugging with Laurel sometime in the last week… wonderful job coding! We are going to continue to work at your own pace, so if you have the time and opportunity to code any time this week, please keep working from where you left off, adding to your skills little-by-little. If you haven’t gotten the chance to start yet, it’s never too late to start!

If you’re wanting to explore the Weebly site and play games in ABCya, or another application, ask an adult first, and if they say “yes”, you can click here to access the Weebly site.

I miss you all… take care of yourselves and your family members, and have a safe, happy week!

Fondly,

Mrs. Larochelle
