Weeks of 5/11 & 5/18 {updated 5/21 for last chapters!!}
Dear Third Grade families,
I miss you. This book captured my heart, and is doing that again as I read it to you. I hope you love it. I hope you love Louie and Winslow, and everyone little by little. I’ll add more chapters every couple days, so please check back every couple of days to see if more chapters are up! Maybe we can all be connected by reading the same book.
What do you think of Mrs. Tooley? Did Nora surprise you in Chapter 27?
Did this book make you cry? I cried at both the happy and the sad. Did the end bring hope? Did it seem like they did the right thing? Who knew a donkey could be so helpful on a farm? Thanks for joining me in reading this book- I hope you liked it, and that you’re excited for summer!!
Take care!
Mrs. Larochelle

Week of 4/27/2020
Dear Third Grade families,
This week, we will read One Plastic Bag and then will look at PebbleGo for information about endangered animals.
One Plastic Bag
Research:
Visit the database PebbleGo (Username: engaged Password: learning) and type “Endangered and Threatened Animals” into the search box to read about endangered animals. You can also read about the endangered animal you are researching by typing your animal into the search box (chimpanzee, jaguar, elephant, etc.).
Free e-book: Zoey and Sassafras: Dragons and Marshmallows
Sideways Stories from Wayside School – Reader’s Theater
This is something you could practice reading aloud with someone in your family, or you could read the parts with different voices and then perform it for your family when everyone can enjoy spending time together.
I hope you have a wonderful week!
Week of 4/20/2020
Dear Third Grade families,
I hope you had a wonderful Spring Break!
Earth Day is April 22nd! This week, we will honor Earth Day by reading a book about a boy who changes the world around him by gardening; learning about humans and the earth; and going on a scavenger hunt in your backyard!
Read/Listen: Please join me in reading The Curious Garden by Peter Brown. Maybe you will help your family in the garden some this week, too.
Research/Learn: Learn more about how to help our earth. Visit the database PebbleGo (Username: engaged Password: learning) and search for the article called “Reusing and Recycling”. I hope you find it to be an interesting nonfiction read. Databases like PebbleGo are very “reliable”. That means that the information is double-checked to make sure that it is true.
Make/Create: Go on a backyard scavenger hunt! Here is a checklist you can use as you search your garden for treasure:
Thanks to Cori George and her blog, heyletsmakestuff.com, for this great idea!
Happy Earth Day!

Zoey and Sassafras: Dragons and Marshmallows
Great news! This wonderful book (first in the Zoey and Sassafras series) is now being offered for free by the author, Asia Citro… Each book in the series features a different magical creature that needs assistance from Zoey, her mother, and her cat! Zoey loves science and taking care of animals. It is being offered as a kindle or PDF download…
Week of 4/6/2020
Dear Third Grade families,
I hope this message finds you well.
April is National Poetry Month, so we will be focusing on haikus today!
Haiku:
A haiku is a type of poetry from Japan. A famous man named Basho was one of the most famous writers of haiku.
A haiku has only 3 lines (5 syllables in the first line, 7 syllables in the second line, 5 syllables in the third line). Here is an example of a haiku that also describes what a haiku is… make sure you count each syllable to make sure it has the right number of syllables:
I am first with five [5 syllables]
Then seven in the middle — [7 syllables]
Five again to end. [5 syllables]
Below is a read-aloud of If Not for the Cat by Jack Prelutsky. On each page, there is a haiku and beautiful painting featuring a different animal. Poems are by Jack Prelutsky, and the amazing painted illustrations are by Ted Rand. I hope you enjoy guessing which animal is being described on each page!
Here is a guide for how to write a Haiku:
These are examples of “Who am I” Haikus by 3rd graders at another school:
Now you can write your own “What am I” Haiku! It only takes 3 short lines. Just take a piece of paper and a pencil outside and look around… You could write about a pet, a butterfly, leaves, trees, rain, or anything you would like! If you love to do artwork, illustrate your haiku and make it beautiful like the illustrations by Ted Rand. You could read it to a family member and have them guess what you are describing!
8 Class Pets + 1 Squirrel ÷ 1 Dog = Chaos:
I converted the readings of 8 Class Pets + 1 Squirrel ÷ 1 Dog = Chaos so that they are in mp3 format, hopefully a little easier to download to your school iPads. I’ll add the last 4 chapters very soon!

Hope you have a wonderful time in the sun this week!
Week of 3/30/2020
Dear Third Grade families,
I miss seeing you each week, but hope you have been enjoying some of the beautiful, warm weather lately!
We are continuing our reading of 8 Class Pets + 1 Squirrel Divided by 1 Dog = Chaos by Vivian Vande Velde. Here are Chapters 5-7, three chapters in which we meet the Neon Tetra (third-grade fish), Lenore (fourth-grade parrot), and Nancy (art room turtle) as the dog leaves chaos in his wake! I hope you’re enjoying the book as much as I am!
Since both tetra fish and mud turtles live in or near water, I hope you enjoy exploring live webcams of water creatures using the following links:
- Monterey Bay Aquarium live cams, including a Sea Otter Cam (my favorite… scroll down until you see images of sea otters and then press “play”!)
- Georgia Aquarium has Jellyfish, Beluga Whales, and more
Take some time to drop everything and read, making use of TumbleBookLibrary!
