Fly Little Butterflies, Fly!

This week, we have been learning about the lifecycle of butterflies called metamorphosis. We read the story The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle and made our own flip book about the story. Please ask your child to “read” the story to you with his/her flip book! We also have caterpillars in our classroom. They came to us in a little cup with some caterpillar “goo” or food on the bottom. Upon their arrival, they were so tiny. Now they are growing into big caterpillars as they crawl and munch about getting ready for their great transformation!

This week, Senora Higgs also talked about “mariposas” in her classroom. We had some outside time on the Playscape to read La Oruga Muy Hambrienta by Eric Carle.

During class, they have been studying the Monarch butterflies, including the trips to and from Mexico.  They also looked on the site journeynorth.org. Since the Monarchs are in Virginia now, and even farther north, after flying from Mexico,  they did “butterfly races” to recreate their life cycle. There was an egg on a spoon for egg or “huevo”, crawling for the caterpillar or “oruga”, wrapping students in toilet paper for a chrysalis or “crisalida,” and finally they flew like butterflies or “mariposas.” Lots of great acting and vocabulary was demonstrated in this activity!

We can’t wait to see our butterflies emerge and then we can release them into the great wide world!

Have a great weekend! Looking forward to a fun day with Grandparents and Friends tomorrow!
