Dear third-grade students,

Thank you so much to everyone who was able to join me for our Zoom meeting last week! I had so much fun seeing you and talking about French food with you! This week we will not have a Zoom meeting, but we will have one next week! Your learning goal this week is for you to be able to order in a restaurant. That’s an important skill, right?

-Madame Ibarra

  • To begin the lesson, answer this question: Qu’est-ce que tu préfères: le chocolat ou la vanille? Je préfère ____________.
  • Watch this video of an interaction between la serveuse (the waitress) and le client (the guest at the café). There is a special guest appearance by Monsieur Ibarra!
  • Play this online flashcard game to practice the vocabulary. Click on the flashcard to hear the sentence and see a picture of the meaning. You can also play practice games by clicking on the links to the left of the page. Pay attention to the pronunciation and practice by repeating aloud. Dear third-grade students,

I hope it was useful for you to learn how to identify objects that you use everyday- in French! Did you show off your skills for setting the table to your family? Thank you to those who sent videos or recorded on Flipgrid- I love seeing you and hearing you! This week we will talk about French culture when it comes to eating. We will also explore some typical French dishes. Miam miam! NEW THIS WEEK: Our second lesson will be conducted via Zoom! Please see below for the link! I will also email parents so that they are aware.

Week Seven, Session One:

  • To begin the lesson, answer this question: Est-ce que tu as faim? Possible responses: J’ai faim! (I’m hungry) Je n’ai pas faim. (I’m not hungry) Pas vraiment. (Not really).
  • Watch this video of Madame Ibarra discussing how a typical French meal is structured. The video is a little long, but she is speaking in English and describing some interesting cultural information!
  • Go to this Flipgrid and share some thoughts about the discussion. You can ask a question if there is something you are wondering about. You can share something you learned from the discussion. You could also make a comparison between the way your family shares a meal and the way a French family shares a meal.

Week Seven, Session Two:

  • For our second lesson, we will meet on Friday, May 8 at 2:00 pm via Zoom! The lesson should last about 30-40 minutes, and the class will be recorded and saved. I will email the link for the Zoom meeting to the parents. There will be a “waiting room,” so please be patient as I let everyone in. Merci!

Our topic for the remainder of the school year will be…. everyone’s favorite….French food and dining in a café!! I had a couple of requests from students for this topic, so we are going to run with it! We will also try to meet at least once via Zoom, so please be on the lookout for an email concerning that.

It also makes my day to receive an email or video from you- please keep them coming! This week we will learn about les animaux de la ferme (farm animals) and will also do some awesome reading practice. Have fun!

Sincerely,

Madame Ibarra

  • Open this audio file of Madame Ibarra reading aloud the text you just read. Listen to the audio and read the text again at the same time that you are listening to the audio. Then practice reading it aloud to yourself. This story is very repetitive, but the more that you repeat the words in a meaningful context, the better your brain will learn and the more natural your pronunciation will be! This is a valuable language learning exercise!
  • Record a video of yourself reading the final paragraph from the story that is in the green Record your video on this Flipgrid!
  • Sing the “Au revoir” song to finish the lesson.

Dear third-grade families,

I hope that you enjoyed practicing wild animal vocabulary last week! This week you will discover a mystery animal and listen to a story about that special animal. Next week will be our Spring Break, so there will not be any French lessons.

I would really appreciate it if you could give me some feedback about French class so far. Do you think the lessons and activities are an appropriate length and level? Do you enjoy having two lessons per week, or would it be more feasible to do one? Are there any activities you would like to do or topics you would like to learn about? I will spend some time planning over the break and will definitely take into consideration any and all feedback that I get from families.

Merci beaucoup!

Madame Ibarra

Week Four, Session One:

  • To begin the lesson, answer this question: “Quel âge as-tu?” Refer to this video if you don’t know how to answer.
  • Watch this video about a mystery animal. Pay attention to the clues Madame Ibarra gives and try to figure out which animal it is!
  • Watch this video and dance along to the song. Have fun! Here are the actions you will do:
    • Mets-toi à plat ventre! = get on your belly
    • Avance à quatre pattes! = crawl on all fours
    • Tu nages sous l’eau = you swim underwater
    • Je vois tes gros yeux = I see your big eyes
    • Ouvre grand la bouche = open your mouth up wide
    • Montre-moi tes dents = show me your teeth
  • Imagine an awesomely beautiful animal, whatever your heart desires! Draw and color this special animal and label the body parts of the animal in French. Use this Body Parts Vocab sheet as a reference. Take a picture and email it to me!
  • Sing the “Au revoir” song to finish the lesson.

Week Four, Session Two:

  • To begin the lesson, do the following: Touchez les yeux. Ouvrez la bouche. Touchez le ventre. Montre-moi les dents. Refer to the crocodile song from the previous lesson for help if needed.
  • Watch this video of a story about a crocodile making friends.
  • Do your own “mystery animal” activity. Using the animal that you drew during the first lesson, or a stuffed animal of your choice, put it in a box or under a blanket. Use this writing guide to make a description of your animal so that you can give some clues about it. Be prepared to share with the class via Zoom- more info will be sent in an email.

Sing the “Au revoir” song to finish the lesson.
